Christmas Jars

Alright, so the books arrived last night and I'm done with Book #1!  Yippy!  I read Christmas Jars today.  It was great.  Obviously a quick read, but incredibly inspiring.  The overall theme is giving out of love.  My family will start a Christmas jar.  It won't be much this year (considering it's already the middle of October), but that's not the point.  It's not about how much money is in it, it's about the sacrifice it takes to make the jar and the love that it's given out of.  Every night when we put our coins in we will say a prayer for the mystery recipient.  I know that those prayers will do more for the individual than the money that they receive.

If you're interested in starting your own Christmas Jar let me know and I'll explain in more detail...or read "Christmas Jars" by Jason Wright.

I am interested! I think you should organize a book club. Or, how about you and I choose and book to discuss! I like the books you choose. But, I think we'd need to pick a "heftier" book so it takes longer than a day to read!

I would love to do that Bethany! I've never been a part of a book club or discussion group. I think it would be really interesting to see what others take away from something. What book would you like to read?

Basically your goal for your Christmas Jar is to empty your pockets of all change every night (the whole household if they're willing to participate) and save up the coins in the jar all year round. Once your jar is full you can cash those coins in for a bill to save room and keep on filling! Then on Christmas Eve you are to give it (anonymously) to a person you feel needs it. Not necessarily the money (although they may need that too), but someone you think needs to know that there are people thinking about them, people who care about their well being, or someone who you think needs to learn a lesson about giving. I just found a vase in my laundry room closet and let Hunter paint it in Red and Green. It's going to sit on our Entertainment Center in the living room and every night I'm going to let Hunter put in whatever change we have from the day and say a prayer with him for the person who will receive it on December 24th. I'm not sure if I'll "scope" someone out before hand or if I'll just drive around on Christmas Eve until the car "stops" and I feel led to give it someone I see. Either way, I'm excited about this new family tradition and I hope that it catches on around the country!

Um, when do you have time to read!? :)

What a great idea. We've talked about simplifying Christmas to one gift each and spending the rest of our budget on a family in need, but this method of giving is so much more involved!

Hi Ashley! So fun to see you and your chums wanting to do some good in the world. I promise if you try the Christmas Jars experiment just once, you'll do it forever! It's life changing :)
