Titus

Today I read the following post on Amy's blog.  I met Amy 2 years ago at my first Created For Care Retreat.  She is the real deal.  She is friendly, concerned, and so, so sweet.  I must say that I agree with her on this topic...what happened to good old fashioned helping one another?  We're talking about $484.00 people...some months we waste that on fast food.  Could you give up just one trip to McDonalds...?

"While I was in Uganda, I met a little boy who seems to be around 5 or 6 years old called Titus.  His aunt lived near where we were staying and he would come over to play often.  I noticed that he was very shy and stayed to himself.  One day I mentioned to his aunt that he was shy and she told me that he can't hear.  Then I approached Titus and realized that his outer ears were very malformed.

Of course, all things to do with kids and ears speak right to my heart.  Another momma staying with us was also touched so we set out to help Titus see a doctor.

Titus is not an orphan.  He is not adoptable.  He has no need to be adopted.  He lives a very happy life with his mother.  However, his mother has never had enough money to take Titus to the doctor.

We were able to raise some money and contribute what we could to take Titus and his little cousin to the doctor.  His little cousin just needed an ear wax cleaning and he's good to go.  Titus had to go from doctor to doctor and each one did a few tests and finally referred him to a plastic surgeon.

We've run out of money to pay for Titus to see the plastic surgeon.  It's going to cost 900,000 shillings for the doctor visit and surgery and 100,000 shillings for transportation.  I'm guessing that this is a really low estimate and the family will need about 200,000 more shillings for medications after the surgery, follow-ups and extras.

All together that's about $484.

I've tried to contact several ministries and charities that help children with hearing loss in Uganda.  No takers.

I know many ministries in Uganda that help orphans.  I know a ministry that runs an orphanage.  I know a ministry that helps special needs orphans.  I know a ministry that helps kids who are HIV+.  I know a ministry that feeds hungry kids. Titus doesn't fall into any of these categories.   So I don't have any nice way for people to donate to a ministry or a tax-deductible account.

Remember when life used to be simple and churches took up collections for those in need and there weren't any envelopes or online donations or papers that come in the mail for us to write off on our taxes? I guess there is a lot more accountability that way, but some times it doesn't have to be so complicated.

Titus needs help.

If anyone feels led to help little Titus on his way to a new life of hearing, please let me know at levy.mommy@gmail.com or you can donate to our Paypal account at levy.mommy@gmail.com and write "Titus" in the description box. "
