- First we must complete our home study, which consists of a few meeting with a social worker, lots of paperwork, some fingerprints, and money. (lol)
- We must complete some paperwork for our Placing Agency, and then mostly our Dossier. This is the packet of official paperwork that must be sent to Ethiopia for the government to translate and read to decide whether we are fit to parent one of their children.
- After we finish our home study, we are able to send off for our Immigration Paperwork (otherwise known as the I-600A). This takes 6 weeks and allows us to bring our child/ren into the USA as citizens and immediate family members.
- After we get our Immigration Approval (which takes approximately 6 weeks), Complete our Home study (which will have taken us 5 weeks), and Finish our Dossier (which I hope takes about 3 weeks), we will be placed on the "waiting list". Our agency is telling us that it should be about a 3 month wait until our Referral.
- We have requested the following: 0-18 mo. boy, siblings (at least one boy) 0-4 years old, or 2 unrelated children 0-4 years old (at least one boy). There was an entire page of medical issues that we would or would not accept, but basically we requested a child with minor issues...nothing major.
- After the agency finds a child/ren that match our requests, they will send us photos and all known medical information. At that point, we have the option of accepting or rejecting the children.
- After accepting our referrals, we will be given a court date. The court will actually take place in Ethiopia with our POA present. After we pass (which could not happen due to a lack of any particular paper in our file), we are the official parents of our child/ren.
- After passing court we will be given an Embassy Date in Ethiopia and will travel there to pick up our child/ren!
It's a long, complicated, and exhausting process, but one that I can already tell is going to be WELL WORTH the trials! :0)
